Introduction
The family Versurigidae comprises a single genus, Versuriga Kramp, 1961. The generic nomenclature is complicated, having been originally called Versura, and also Crossostoma; Crossostoma was found by Mayer (1910) to be pre-occupied for a mollusc, and the type species of Versura was found by Stiasny (1922e) to be identical to Mastigias ocellata, leaving the genus and family unstable. Kramp (1961b) stabilised the nomenclature, but left two of Haeckel's species in doubt.
The genus Haplorhiza has not been recognised for about 100 years, although it was proposed for two species from Australian waters. Future studies should attempt to resolve the identity of these species.
Diagnosis
Kolpophorae with annular subumbrellar muscles. With eight rhopalar radial canals. With ring canal. With a continuous genital porticus. Subgenital ostia very broad. Arm-disk quadratic, with four primary canals. With broad, leaf-shaped mouth-arms.
