Introduction

The Hypoderatidae is a family of 80 species, all of which occur in the nests of vertebrates. Most of the species are known only from the deutonymph, which is a parasite in the skin of birds and, less often, mammals (OConnor 2009). The parasitic deutonymph can feed and grow inside the tissues of its host, despite the lack of functional mouthparts. The Australian fauna includes 11 species in three genera, all found in the skin of birds (reviewed by Domrow 1992).
