Introduction

The family Unciolidae was established by Myers & Lowry (2003) based on a phylogenetic analysis of corophiidean amphipods. This family, was recently recorded for the first time from the Great Barrier Reef, Australia (Myers 2009). According to Myers & Lowry (2003) kamakids are similar to isaeids and photid corophiideans. The two genera reported in Australia belong to the subfamily Kamakinae. According to Myers (2009) kamakines are characterised by strongly produced head lateral lobes that completely enclose the eye. They are tube-dwelling corophioid amphipods, but little is known about their way of life. They are often found in estuarine habitats among mangroves.
