Introduction

The Synallactidae are a cosmopolitan family of some fifteen genera, including five recorded in Australian waters. Thirteen species are recorded in the Australian fauna.

Synallactids are distinguished from other aspidochirote families by the following combination of character states: tentacles peltate; tentacle ampullae absent; gonads in one or two tufts; ossicles include tables and sometimes 'C'-shaped rods; cuvierian organs absent.
