Cosmopolitan, found in temperate, sub-tropical and tropical waters in all oceans — Australian distribution: Weipa and Moreton Bay, QLD.

Mostly intertidal to 30 m depth, but a few records are from 100-900 m depth.

This most common member of the Sipunculus genus has been studied in detail by anatomists, physiologists, biochemists and ecologists.
