Introduction

The family Sclerodactylidae is known from the Indo-Pacific region and Atlantic Ocean. Some 19 genera are known, including four from Australian waters. Seven Australian species are recorded.

The family is distinguished from other dendrochirotid families by the following combination of character states: tentacles 10–20, calcareous ring with entire, not multiplated bifurcate processes on the radial plates; ossicles include plates or tables with two pillars which may be variously reduced or modified.
