Holotype ZMB 20698 ♀ adult skin & skull, Cape Otway, VIC. - Pseudochirus laniginosus modestus Thomas, O. 1926. On various animals obtained during Capt. Wilkin's expedition in Australia. Annals and Magazine of Natural History 9 17: 625-635 [June 1926] [632] [label on holotype reads: '26.3.11.37. Oct. 1924. Collector's No. 764. St. George's River. NSW Australia. Coll. G.H. Wilkins W.R.I.E.' - at that time Wilkins was in Arnhem Land].
Type data:
Holotype BMNH 1926.3.11.37 ♂ subadult skin only (unknown locality; said to be 'St. George's River, NSW', but no such place exists or existed. Possibly from George's River, Sydney, NSW as this specimen and a paratype now in QM (J4518) were among specimens sent back at end of Wilkins' expedition, and probably were animals purchased from J.H. Wright. All Wilkins' NSW specimens (from Ebor) were catalogued at BMNH in 1925 from an earlier shipment), unknown locality.
