Family PIERSIGIIDAE Oudemans, 1902

Introduction

Piersigiidae is a small family of four genera and about ten species of water mites, which occur in streams and pools in Europe, North America, India and Australia (Viets 1987; Walter et al. 2009). The known larvae are parasites of aquatic beetles. The Australian fauna includes only two genera with one species each, which have been collected in interstitial water in fresh water streams (Harvey 1998), but nothing else is known of their biology.
