Introduction

The family Pachytroctidae comprises nine genera and 79 species worldwide. For the Australian fauna only five species in two genera have been recorded and both are uncommon. One mainland species lives in litter and another is associated with the nests of a spider.

Pachytroctidae have the first four or five flagellar segments not 'annulated'. The ocelli are spaced and the compound eyes are relatively larger than in related families, even in apterous forms. The pronotum is not subdivided, the body is not dorsoventrally depressed and the femora not dilated. The wings are rounded, with distinct veins; the pterostigmal area is not thickened. The media of the forewing is 2-branched and the areola postica is narrow. There is no nodulus and no clunium. The subgenital plate is sometimes without the T-shaped sclerite present in related families. The gonapophyses are complete, without setae.
