Introduction
The family Ophiotrichidae is widely distributed in the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans. Sixteen genera are known with 169 species.
Ophiotrichids are distinguished from other families in the order Ophiurida by the following combination of character states: disc with thorny spines and/or spinelets; arms slender; arm spines thorny, usually slender, not adpressed; teeth stout, quadrangular, spiniform tooth papillae clustered at apex of each jaw; oral papillae absent.
