Family CHIRODISCIDAE Trouessart, 1892

Introduction

The Chirodiscidae is a cosmopolitan family of 28 genera and about 250 species of ectoparasitic mites that occur in the fur of a variety of mammals, mostly bats (OConnor 2009). The world fauna was reviewed by Bochkov (2010), and the Australian fauna of 6 genera and 11 species, all from bat hosts, was catalogued and keyed by Domrow (1992).

Bochkov (2010) listed Alabidocarpus parryae Fain, 1976 as occurring in "Australia", without further qualification. However, that statement is based on a broad concept of the Australian biogeographic region, which includes areas that are not part of Australia as defined here. This species was described from Vanuatu and has not been recorded from Australia. The same argument applies to Asiolabidocarpus bougainvilleensis Fain, 1972 (Solomon Islands), Dentocarpus notopteris Fain, 1976 (Vanuatu), Dentocarpus borneoensis Fain, 1979 (Borneo), Olabidocarpus orientalis Fain, 1976 (Malaya and Java), Olabidocarpus americanus McDaniel & Lawrence, 1964 (North America, Hawaii and the Galapagos Islands), and Olabidocarpus aselliscus McDaniel & Lawrence, 1964 (Solomon Islands).
