Family OPPIIDAE Sellnick, 1937

Introduction

The Oppiidae is the largest family of Oribatid mites, with about 140 genera and over 1000 species world-wide (Schatz et al. 2011). The most important recent taxonomic studies of the family are by Subias & Arillo (2001) and Woas (2002). The family is diverse and abundant in all biogeographic regions. The Australian fauna includes 23 genera and 38 species, and many more species remain to be recognised and described. Eight of the recorded genera are known only from unidentified species. Unidentified species have been recorded from Australia a number of times for the other genera, and unidentified Oppiidae were also reported by Stone & Simpson (1990), Harvey et al. (1993), Walter (1995, 1999), Longstaff et al. (1999), Osler & Beattie (2001), Kinnear & Tongway (2004), Adolphson & Kinnear (2008) and Beyer et al. (2011).

Drepanoppia koki Mahunka, 1993 was described from Tanzania. Balogh & Balogh (2002) incorrectly recorded it from Tasmania.

Genus Lanceoppia Balogh, 1965

Introduction

The correct authorship of Lanceoppia is Balogh, 1965, not Hammer, 1962, as is often stated, since Hammer did not designate a type species for the genus, and her name is therefore unavailable. See Marshall et al. (1987) for further discussion of this point. In addition to the named species listed here, unidentified species of Lanceoppia have been reported from Australia by Moulton (1982), Malipatil & Blyth (1982), Lee (1986), Colloff & Halliday (1998), Proctor et al. (2002), Osler & Murphy (2005) and Green (2010).

Species Setoppia toroki (Balogh, 1982)

Miscellaneous Literature Names

Introduction

The name of this species was originally spelled correctly as toroki. The subsequent emendation to toeroeki by Balogh (1983) is incorrect, since the species was named after 'Dr. L. Török, of Hungarian origin'; the letter ö is emended to oe only if the name in which it occurs is of German origin (International Code of Zoological Nomenclature).
