Family NOTHRIDAE Berlese, 1885

Introduction

The family Nothridae includes three genera and 93 species world-wide (Schatz et al. 2011). The family is cosmopolitan, but is most diverse in the Southern Hemisphere (data from Subias 2011). These mites are found in forest litter, where they feed on dead plant material and the associated fungi (Norton & Behan-Pelletier 2009). The Australian fauna includes three genera and nine species, six of which were described by Colloff (2011). Unidentified species have been recorded from Australia a number of times as listed for each genus, and unidentified Nothridae were also reported by Heatwole et al. (1981) and Walter & Stirling (2018).
