Species Dimorphothrombium myloriense (Womersley, 1937)
- Microtrombidium myloriense Womersley, H. 1937. A revision of the Australian Trombidiidae (Acarina). Records of the South Australian Museum (Adelaide) 6: 75-100.
Introduction
Womersley (1937) described M. (M.) myloriense from two specimens from "Cox Creek, Mylor, September 26, 1937". The South Australian Museum (SAM) has two slides of this species labelled "TYPE" in Womersley's handwriting. One of these slides contains the entire specimen minus the palps, on a slide bearing SAM registration numbers J5281 and ARA7524. A second slide labelled J5280 and ARA7524 carries the palps of this same specimen. These two slides together obviously constitute the holotype of this species. A third slide contains an entire specimen with the same locality data, labelled "PARATYPE" in Womersley's handwriting. The information given by Womersley is inconsistent with these specimen labels on two counts. First, the collecting data on the labels of these three slides read "Cock's Creek, Mylor, S. A. 10/35, HW", which should read Cox Creek. Second, Womersley gave the collecting date of these specimens as September 26, 1937. The holotype and paratype slides, however, are labelled "10/35", meaning October 1935, so Womersley's recording of the collecting date of these two specimens as September 26, 1937, must be in error. Womersley (1945) then appears to have described "Microtrombidium myloriense sp. nov." on the basis of "the type and 1 paratype, Mylor, South Australia, Oct., 1935; two other specimens Mylor, 14th Sept., 1935, and Belair, S. Aust., S. Aust., 26th Sept., 1927". This listing appears to represent the correct collecting data for the 1937 holotype and paratype of M. myloriense, with the addition of three further non-type specimens. Two of these three additional specimens are labelled "Mylor SA 14/9/35 HW" or "Mylor SA 14.9.35 HW", and the other "Belair 26.9.37 JSW". It is therefore apparent that Womersley's (1945) designation of this species as "sp. nov." is an error, and that the species he refers to here is nothing more than M. myloriense Womersley, 1937.
