Family JOHNSTONIANIDAE Thor, 1935
- Johnstonianinae Thor, S. 1935. Übersicht und Einteilung der Familie Trombidiidae W. E. Leach 1814 in Unterfamilien. Zoologischer Anzeiger 109: 107-112.
Introduction
The family Johnstonianidae has sometimes been placed in the Trombidioidea, but I here follow the classification used by Walter et al. (2009). Adults in this family are predators in wet soil and litter, and their larvae are parasites of a range of insect groups. The European fauna was revised by Wohltmann et al. (2004), and their biological observations are also relevant more generally. The Australian fauna includes only one described species in each of four genera, and an unconfirmed record of an unidentified species in a fifth genus. Most of the Australian species have not been mentioned in the literature for over 50 years, and all are in need of revision.
