Type species:
Musca sylvarum Linnaeus, 1758 by monotypy. - Zelima Hendel, F. 1903. Literatur. Diptera. Wiener Entomologische Zeitung 22: 58–60 [58] [Preoccupied by Zelima Fabricius, 1807. Hendel (1903) proposed Zelima in synonymy by treating it as a synonym of Xylota Meigen, 1803, but did not include any species. Bezzi & Stein (1907) treated Zelima as a synonym of Xylota Meigen, 1803, and included 25 species (under Xylota). Hendel (1908) was the first after Meigen (1800) to give characters to differentiate the taxon (reproducing Meigen’s characters) and to treat Zelima as valid, which makes the name available from Hendel (1903). Coquillett (1910) selected Musca segnis Linnaeus, 1758, which is the type species by subsequent designation. Musca segnis Linnaeus, 1758 is currently treated in Xylota Meigen, 1822, which makes Zelima Hendel, 1903 a junior synonym of Xylota Meigen, 1822 (Evenhuis & Pape 2017)].
