Introduction

This family is widespread throughout the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans. Two genera are recognised, including one in Australian waters, represented by a single species.

Gephyrothuriidae, recently referred by O'Loughlin (1998b) to the order Molpadida, are distinguished by the following features:15 digitate tentacles, rudimentary papillae, tentacle ampullae absent, lacking a posterior taper to the body, and no spicules in the body wall.
