Introduction

The family Echinometridae is known from 12 extant genera from circum-tropical waters. Five genera are represented in the Australian fauna by eight species.

Echinometridae are distinguished from other echinoid families by the following combination of character states: test circular or ovate; periproct with multiple plates; blade of globiferous pedicellariae with unpaired lateral tooth, lantern camarodont-type.
