Introduction
The type species of this genus, Agama barbata Cuvier 1829, is a junior synonym of Stellio discosomus Péron 1807. While this latter name has been supressed to maintain nomenclatural stabilty (Shea, 2001) it was subsequently discovered that it was used as the type species of the genus Discosomus Oken 1816 (Shea, 2021). Given both genera are based on the same type species Discosomus Oken 1816 is a senior synonym of Pogona Storr 1982. However based on prevailing usage and to maintain stability in nomenclature Shea (2021) referred to Article 23.9 of the Code of Zoological Nomenclature to establish reversal of precedence in priority, giving Pogona Storr 1982 the status of nomen protectum. See Shea (2021) for further details.
