Introduction
The family Diadematidae is circum-tropical in distribution. Eight extant genera are known. Six of these, represented by 12 species, are found in Australian waters.
Diadematidae are distinguished from other families of diadematoid echinoids by the following combination of character states: test of moderate to large size, usually somewhat flattened, commonly rather flexible; primary tubercles perforate, crenulate; primary and secondary spines usually hollow and usually verticillate, not divided internally by transverse septa.
