Extra Ecological Information
Adult a vicious biter, readily attacking humans, domestic animals and birds; major pest in coastal areas of Victoria, Tasmania and parts of South Australia but less important in New South Wales; laboratory vector of Ross River virus and capable of carrying Murray Valley encephalitis virus under laboratory conditions, also canine heartworm (Dirofilaria sp.); vector of myxomatosis in rabbits and Eperythrozoon ovis, a blood parasite of sheep which causes anaemia; isolation of Ross River virus from specimens collected in east Gippsland, VIC and the east coast of Tasmania; larva typically found in brackish to freshwater ground pools; associated with coastal swamps and bushland; for extensive biological information see Lee et al. (1982: 136).
