Species Heterobostrychus aequalis (Waterhouse, 1884)

Introduction

This species is a timber borer and is most likely exotic to Australia. From Wylie and Peters (2016): Presence in Australia is unclear, with records from the 1950s and 1960s indicating the beetle was present but no breeding populations detected since. However, there have been three separate reports of H. aequalis in Cairns in 2013 and 2015, which were not linked to imported timber. Investigations are ongoing to determine the extent of the population, but it is thought to be not widely established.

Heterobostrychus aequalis is a notifiable pest nationally, and in the Northern Territory, Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria.
