Introduction

The family Avenzoariidae includes 18 genera of mites that occur in the feathers of a wide variety of aquatic birds (Charadriiformes) (Gaud & Atyeo 1996; OConnor 2009). Only ten species in four genera are known from Australia, and more than half those species have been described since 1990. Many more species will be found when the feather mite fauna of Australian birds is surveyed more extensively.
