Introduction

Argulidae is the only family of Branchiura, all temporary external parasites in freshwater, estuarine and marine environments. Their principal hosts are fishes, but tadpoles are also susceptible. Their biology has been dealt with extensively partly because they can become pests of fish in aquaculture. Key references are Kabata (1988) and Walker et al. (2004). The ecology of one unidentified species of branchiuran in Australia is summarised by Webb (2008).
