Genus Acanthorhabdus Burton, 1929

Diagnosis

Massive non-fistulose growth form; ectosomal skeleton composed of a loose halichondroid tangential layer of acanthoxeas (acanthorhabds) with heavy spines and microspined tylote apices; choanosomal skeleton with smooth modified styles (anisoxeas) often provided with a terminal mucron, forming massive multispicular plumose and reticulate columns, with acanthoxeas dispersed between (but not echinating) fibres; microscleres palmate anisochelae with spurs.
