Higher Taxon AGNATHA

Introduction

Currently two extant groups of jawless fishes are know: the hagfishes and the lampreys. Currently there are two different views about relationships of these groups to the jawed vertebrates (often referred to as Gnathostomata). One hypothesis is that the hagfishes and lampreys are closely related group as here in the Agnatha (or Cyclostomata) separate from the Gnathostomata. The second view is that hagfishes are the sister group to lampreys and jawed vertebrates, with these two later groups included as the Vertebrata. See discussion by Renaud (2011).
