Extra Distribution Information

Reported in Queensland waters by Kramp (1965); however, these specimens are more accurately referable to L. aquila based on their structural morphology (Gershwin re-examination of specimens; unpublished notes 1999). Seasonally common throughout the tropical Atlantic.


Ecological Descriptors

Carnivorous, epipelagic, marine, planktonic.

Extra Ecological Information

Dependant on zooxanthellae for food supply.

 

Diagnosis

Linuche with three rows of subumbrellar protuberances: one bilobed horizontally between the gonads near the mouth, another oblong vertically between the gonads near the bottom, and the other round around the bottom of the gonads.

 

Notes

All stages of the life cycle have been demonstrated to give the dermatological illness known as 'seabather's eruption', common in the Caribbean (Segura Puertas et al. 2001)
