Appias paulina paulina (Cramer, 1777)

Papilio paulina Cramer, P. 1777. Uitlandsche Kapellen. [Dutch title] or Papilions exotiques des trois parties du monde l'Asie, l'Afrique et l'Amérique. [French title]. Amsterdam Baalde and Utrecht : Wild Vol. 2 1–152 pls 92–192 pp. [issued 1777, dated 1775-1790] [21 pl. 110 figs E, F] [issued 1777, dated 1775–1790, see International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature 1958. Opinion 516. Determination under the plenary powers of the relative precedence to be assigned to certain works on the Order Lepidoptera (Class Insecta) published in 1775 by Pieter Cramer, Michael Denis & Ignaz Schiffermüller, Johann Christian Fabricius, Johann Casper Fuessly, and S.A. von Rottemburg respectively. Opinions and Declarations rendered by the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature 19: 1–44 [7]].
Type data: type status and whereabouts unknown *; Cramer in the original publication did not indicate the number of specimens he had, but gave two localities, his illustration shows a female; Parsons, M.J. 1998. The Butterflies of Papua New Guinea; their systematics and biology. San Diego : Academic Press 736 pp. [291] (incorrectly referred to a holotype).
Type locality: Sri Lanka (as Ceylon by Moore; Cramer in original description gave Tranquebar, Coromandel Coast, India and near Batavia, Java, Indonesia), see Moore, F. 1905. Pieridae. pp. 1–16 in Moore, F. (ed). Lepidoptera Indica. Covent Garden : Lovell Reeve & Co. Vol. 7 286 pp. [8] (on the basis of Cramer's figures, stated that Cramer's localities were wrong and that 'this species is confined to Ceylon'; the interpretation of the subspecies paulina Cramer by all authors since Moore has recognised a type locality of Sri Lanka); Bridges, C.A. 1988. Catalogue of Papilionidae & Pieridae (Lepidoptera: Rhopalocera). Urbana, Illinois : Charles A. Bridges 323 pp. [I.232] (recorded, but did not verify, the type locality as Sri Lanka (as Ceylon)).
