• Murex Linnaeus, C. 1758. Systema naturae per regna tria naturae, secundem classes, ordines, genera, species, cum characteribus, differentis, synonymis, locis. Editio decima, reformata. Holmiae : Laurentii Salvii Vol. 1 10, 824 pp. [746] [Montfort used Murex pecten [Lightfoot, 1786] (not an originally included nominal species) as the valid name of the type species of Murex, but cited Murex tribulus in its synonymy. • Acupurpura Jousseaume, F. 1880. Division méthodique de la Famille des Purpuridés. Le Naturaliste 42: 335-336 [335] [name attributed by Jousseaume to Bayle. Diagnosed by Jousseaume, 1880, Revue et Magazin de Zoologie, (1879): 324].

  Type species:

   Murex tenuispina Lamarck, 1822 by original designation.
• Tubicauda Jousseaume, F. 1880. Division méthodique de la Famille des Purpuridés. Le Naturaliste 42: 335-336 [335].

  Type species:

   Murex brevispina Lamarck, 1822 by original designation.
