Species Thinornis cucullatus (Vieillot, 1818)

Hooded Dotterel, Hooded Plover

Introduction

This species has previously been widely referred to as T. rubricollis (Gmelin, 1789). This name was based entirely on Latham’s General Synonpsis of Birds Vol III (1785) in which he described the “Red-necked Plover”, providing the name rubricollis used by Gmelin (1789). However, Mathews (1912) stated that Latham’s description was “inapplicable to every Australian species” and suggested it was a composite based on two illustrations by W.W. Ellis (Surgeon’s mate on James Cook’s third voyage), one of the present species, and one of Phalaropus lobatus (Red-necked Phalarope). In an attempt to clarify its identity, a neotype was designated by McAllan & Christidis 1998, but Olson (1998) pointed out that the circumstances do not qualify for such a procedure under the rules of the ICZN. To resolve the situation, Olson (1998) designated Ellis' Phalaropus illustration (housed in the NHM) as the lectotype of Charadrius rubricollis Gmelin, 1789, (a junior synonym of Tringa lobate Linnaeus 1758 = Phalaropus lobatus) making the name unavailable for the Australian Hooded Plover. The next available name for the present species is Charadrius cucullatus Viellot, 1818. See Mathews (1913) and Olson (1998) for further details, information on Ellis’ drawings can be found in Sharpe (1906).
