Introduction

The original spelling of the type genus of this family was Kytodites, which is used here. Cytodites and Cytoditidae are frequently used incorrect spellings (Domrow 1992). The family includes endoparasitic mites that occur in the upper respiratory tract of birds. There is a total of five species, four of which occur in Australia. One of the species, Kytodites nudus, the air-sac mite of chickens, can cause significant pathology in domestic poultry and other birds (Mullen & OConnor 2009), and has frequently been reported in poultry in Australia.
