Species Siphanta kurandae Fletcher, 1985

Compiler and date details

7 March 2011 - Murray J. Fletcher

Introduction

This species was based on a small group of specimens from Kuranda, in the wet tropics of North Queensland, and this locality is also the derivation of the name. The strongly rounded convex costal margin and broadly rounded apical angle of the tegmen, together with the evenly rounded lateral margins of the frons are helpful, but not definitive, features in separating females from those of S. hebes which this species resembles generally.

Diagnosis

acuta Group. Head produced medially in front of eyes so that frons apically convex and vertex at least half as long as wide. Frons with three short longitudinal indicated near apex. Tegmen triangular with apical angle rounded and sutural angle right-angled or acutely produced dorsally. M1+2 branched level with apex of clavus. Coloration green or grey-green, often fading to yellow in dried specimens. Males usually duller than females. Apex of head, apices of fore- and mid-tibiae and all tarsi and often lateral angles of frons marked with red. Tegmen with minute granulations in all cells leaving bare circular spot in centre of each cell. Costal margin pallid, then narrowly red around apical margin and claval margin to apex of clavus. Individuals may lack all red coloration and show other variation.
S. kurandae. Tegmen occasionally with one or two small red marks in centre. Granules concolorous with dull green ground colour of tegmen. Red marking on head and legs faint, sometimes lacking. Frons with three carinae and rounded lateral margins; vertex with apical margin angulate medially. Tegmen with costal margin bowed; apical angle rounded; sutural angle rightangled. Male pygofer with short, sharply pointed process. Paramere triangular with pointed process at midlength. Female third valvulae triangular with pilose area ventral. Second valvulae gap broad V-shaped (Fletcher 1985).
