Taxonomic Decision for Synonymy

Introduction

This species is the largest species of Siphanta and has been recorded along most of the tropical coastline of NE Queensland as well as at sites in the north of the Northern Territory. It is highly variable in colour, some specimens being completely green while others have extensive markings of red and Distant (1910) described three species based on this variation. Fletcher (1985), following examination of the male genitalia, was able to show that all the names applied to the one species and that it the red colouring was more extensive in males than in females. Based on the structure of the head, S. acutipennis is clearly close to S. expatria Fletcher from New Guinea and Fletcher (1985) recognised the two species as the acutipennis group.
