- Aster erubescens Sieber ex Spreng. (1826) predates Eurybia erubescens Sieber ex DC. (1836) which is often erroneously interpreted as the basionym for Olearia erubescens. Hybrids occur between Olearia erubescens and Olearia argophylla (N.G.Walsh & N.S.Lander in N.G.Walsh & T.J.Entwisle (eds), Fl. Victoria 4: 892 (1999)), and between Olearia erubescens and Olearia megalophylla (N.G.Walsh pers. comm. 2011).

- The epithet of this species was originally spelled 'rheedii', probably after H.A.Rheede as the description of the basionym refers to “Entada. Rheed. mal. 9. p. 151. t. 67.” [i.e. H.A.Rheede, Hort. Malab. (1689)]. Even if Sprengel had intentionally Latinised the surname to 'Rheedius', the correct spelling of the epithet would be 'rheedei' under ICN Art. 60.7 (Melbourne Code, 2012).
