- Aster erubescens Sieber ex Spreng. (1826) predates Eurybia erubescens Sieber ex DC. (1836) which is often erroneously interpreted as the basionym for Olearia erubescens. Hybrids occur between Olearia erubescens and Olearia argophylla (N.G.Walsh & N.S.Lander in N.G.Walsh & T.J.Entwisle (eds), Fl. Victoria 4: 892 (1999)), and between Olearia erubescens and Olearia megalophylla (N.G.Walsh pers. comm. 2011).

- Christmas Island material was referred to "Solanum aff. ferox" by R.M.Barker & I.R.H.Telford, Fl. Austral. 50: 337 (1993). This taxon appeared to be close to true S. ferox, unlike mainland Australian material previously listed under this name and now referred to S. lasiocarpum Dunal. However, A.R.Bean (pers. comm. 2006) believes that Queensland material represents both S. ferox and S. lasiocarpum.

- The epithet of this species was originally spelled 'rheedii', probably after H.A.Rheede as the description of the basionym refers to “Entada. Rheed. mal. 9. p. 151. t. 67.” [i.e. H.A.Rheede, Hort. Malab. (1689)]. Even if Sprengel had intentionally Latinised the surname to 'Rheedius', the correct spelling of the epithet would be 'rheedei' under ICN Art. 60.7 (Melbourne Code, 2012).

- Included in E. cypellocarpa by Brooker, M.I.H. & Slee, A.V. in Walsh, N.G. & Entwisle, T.J. (Ed) (1996), Flora of Victoria 3: 976. Some (e.g. Euclid, 2006) consider E. cypellocarpa should include E. alaticaulis and E. pyrenea. Others (e.g. Nicolle, pers. comm.) consider that E. alaticaulis (syn. E. pyrenea) should be treated as distinct from E. cypellocarpa. Others again (Rule, pers. comm.) consider that E. cypellocarpa, E. alaticaulis and E. pyrenea are all distinct species. The latter is the solution adopted here.

- The authors of EUCLID considered E. fergusonii subsp. dorsiventralis to be worthy of separate species rank, but the formal transfer has not been made. A reputed hybrid E. moluccana x E. paniculata is the basis of E. hybrida Maiden (Pryor & Johnson, 1971; Chippendale, 1988).
