Wilson, Fl. Austral. 4: 212 (1984) stated that the name K. appressa Benth. was illegitimate because Bentham had included as a syntype one of the two specimens previously cited by Mueller under K. tomentosa (1859). Wilson's interpretation was based on the ICBN (1983). However, according to the present Code (2000) this interpretation is incorrect and Bentham's name is legitimate. The citation should therefore be Maireana appressa (Benth.) Paul G. Wilson (1975). Barker et al. (2005) included the name Kochia tomentosa Benth. in synonymy with Maireana appressa. This is in error, and the name K. tomentosa Benth. does not exist.

Although both G.Bentham (Fl. Austral. 7: 603, 1878) and K.Domin (Biblioth. Bot. 20(85): 372. 1915) based their new combinations on J.Lindley's Danthonia lappacea, their material was of a taxon now known as Astrebla squarrosa C.E.Hubb. Thus their descriptions, cited specimens and images all refer to A. squarrosa (fide M.E.Nightingale & C.M.Weiller in K.Mallett (ed), Fl. Australia 44B: 457, 2005). Hybrids between Astrebla lappacea and A. elymoides are known from Qld.

Linnaeus inadvertantly used the name "Aira spicata" for two species in Sp. Pl. 1: 63, 64 (1753), but later corrected the first usage in the errata (Sp. Pl. 2: 1231 (1753)). The correct name for the basionym of Sacciolepis indica (L.) P.Beauv. is thus Aira indica L. Palisot de Beauvois lists "Agrostis myuros Lam." under his new genus Hymenachne (Ess. Agrost. 49, 165 (1812)). This may have been an error for Panicum myuros Lam.

The status of C. arafurica is unclear. Hill & Johnson (1995) recognised it as distinct, along with C. paracolpica and C. bella in Australia, confining C. papuana to PNG. Brooker, Field Guide Eucalypts 3: 50 (2004) suggested that C. arafurica might be synonymous with C. papuana, which he considered extended to Australia. Euclid (2006) maintained C. arafurica as a distinct species, along with C. bella, but placed C. paracolpica in C. papuana. The current NT Census places C. arafurica in C. bella, pointing to major intergradation between the two, documented even by Hill & Johnson (1995). Hybrids are known between C. disjuncta and C. arafurica and intergrades between C. arafurica and C. bella in NT (Hill & Johnson, 1995). Hybrids are recorded between C. pauciseta and C. arafurica-C. bella intergrades and between C. arafurica and C. polysciada (Hill & Johnson, 1995).

The name Altingia cunninghamii G.Don was published as a nom. nud. in J.C.Loudon, Hort. Brit. 408 (1830). The same name was shortly thereafter used by J.Ross, Hobart Town Almanack 66 (1835) in referring to a tree collected by R.Gunn at Meander and by J.W.Scott on the Huon River in Tasmania. Hill (1998) referred A. cunninghamii to the synonymy of Araucaria cunninghamii, but if the two references refer to the same plant, this cannot be correct. The Tasmanian plants of Ross (1835) were probably Athrotaxis selaginoides (A.Buchanan, pers. comm.). Certainly, there is no Araucaria in Tasmania. Alternatively, the J.Ross name may be a misapplication of the G.Don nom. nud. The name "Araucaria cunninghamii Sweet ex Courtois" listed by Chapman, APNI: 250 (1991) is only an indirect reference to Sweet's Hort. Brit (1830) nom. nud., not an attempt to coin a later homonym.
