- The status of C. arafurica is unclear. Hill & Johnson (1995) recognised it as distinct, along with C. paracolpica and C. bella in Australia, confining C. papuana to PNG. Brooker, Field Guide Eucalypts 3: 50 (2004) suggested that C. arafurica might be synonymous with C. papuana, which he considered extended to Australia. Euclid (2006) maintained C. arafurica as a distinct species, along with C. bella, but placed C. paracolpica in C. papuana. The current NT Census places C. arafurica in C. bella, pointing to major intergradation between the two documented even by Hill & Johnson (1995).
Hybrids are known between C. disjuncta and C. papuana (Hill & Johnson, 1995). The name Eucalyptus papuana has been widely misapplied to several species (see Hill & Johnson (1995). Hill & Johnson's very narrow view of C. papuana, which they restricted to PNG, is expanded here to include C. paracolpica.
