Etymology: "Refers to the resemblance of the diaspore to that of species of the grass genus Stipa L. and its relatives in the tribe Stipeae. The resemblance is only superficial but is striking. The 'awn' of Cyathochaeta is in fact the very elongated, tough style-base persistent on the nut, whereas the awn of Stipa sens. lat. is an apical outgrowth of the lemma (Vickery, Jacobs & Everett 1986)."
