Australian Plant Name Index (APNI)
The Australian Plant Name Index (APNI) is a tool for the botanical community that deals with plant names and their usage in the scientific literature, whether as a current name or synonym. APNI does not recommend any particular taxonomy or nomenclature. For a listing of currently accepted scientific names for the Australian vascular flora, please use the Australian Plant Census (APC) link above.
APC Comment:The authority to be assigned to this species is disputed. The name has been cited as Calystegia soldanella (L.) Roem. & Schult. as well as being attributed to Robert Brown, as Calystegia soldanella (L.) R.Br. It is doubtful whether Brown actually made this combination, and if he did whether it is valid. In R.Brown, Prodr. 484 (1810) under Calystegia reniformis he included the following: "Obs. Facies C. Soldanellae L. diversa praecipue pedunculis teretiusculis: an vere distincta species?" This discussion clearly concerns Calystegia reniformis, which is compared to "C. soldanella L." C. soldanella L. is Convolvulus soldanella L, which Brown mentions specifically on the previous page. There is no indication that the "C." should be interpreted as Calystegia, and no indication that Brown intended to make a generic transfer. Even if it could be interpreted that way, the combination "Calystegia soldanella (L.) R.Br." would still be invalid, because Brown did not accept it. At most, it was a combination made in synonymy.
