Vascular Plants
Australian Plant Name Index (APNI)
The Australian Plant Name Index (APNI) is a tool for the botanical community that deals with plant names and their usage in the scientific literature, whether as a current name or synonym. APNI does not recommend any particular taxonomy or nomenclature. For a listing of currently accepted scientific names for the Australian vascular flora, please use the Australian Plant Census (APC) link above.

Etymology:"One of the more frequently used common names for this species is ‘sifting bush’. The earliest usage traced for this name is on a specimen of 1883 (Duff 73, MEL 221139). Cambage (1902) [i.e. R.H.Cambage, Proc. Linn. Soc. N.S.W. 27: 194 (1902)] used it for ‘C. theodori . . . in the Temora district’ (he misapplied the name C. theodorii to C. sifton), which he said was ‘. . .known by the name Sifting Bush. This name is suggested by the similarity of the numerous fallen florets to the ‘siftings’ which are blown away from grain by a winnowing machine’ (p. 194). The designation ‘Sifting bush’ has subsequently been corrupted to ‘Sifton bush’ in the mistaken belief that it referred to a person called Sifton...."
