Introduction
Tentatively we follow Randall (2003) in separating the eastern form as a separate species Thalassoma nigrofasciatum. Bernardi et al. (2004) found no genetic difference and suggested that the two species might be identical. Yaakub et al. (2006) also found no genetic differences and regarded T. nigrofasciatum as a junior synonym of T. jansenii. Other workers have treated both as valid (Allen & Erdmann 2012), Further work is needed on the group.

Introduction
Tentatively we follow Randall (2003) in separating the eastern form previously identified as Thalassoma jansenii as a separate species Thalassoma nigrofasciatum. As a result of the different views on the validity of the species, the name T. jansenii has been widely used in museum identifications, visual sightings and ecological literature from eastern Australia.
