Introduction
The Sebastidae as recognised here follows Ishida (1994), who combined two subfamilies (Sebastinae and Sebastolobinae) typically included in the Scorpaenidae. Nelson (2006) included the group as a subfamily of the Scorpaenidae. The family, as recognised here, comprises more than 130 species in seven genera (Eschmeyer & Fong 2012). Currently, three genera and five species are known from Australia. Some species occur in commercial catches as Ocean Perch (Yearsley et al. 1999).
The Sebastidae are represented in all oceans, with most species found on the continental shelf and slope, often on rocky substrates. Most species belong to Sebastes, which is confined to the North Pacific. Motomura et al. (2007) described a new species from Australia, and Johnson & Motomura (2008) treated southern Australian species. Maximum length reached is over 1 m, although Australian species reach a maximum of about 50 cm.

Type species:
Scorpaena dactylopterus Delaroche, 1809 by original designation.
Introduction
Both species of Helicolenus were described originally from New Zealand. Recent work (Smith et al. 2009, Paul & Horn 2009) in New Zealand suggested that only a single species is known from New Zealand (Helicolenus percoides), which would make H. barathi a junior synonym, and leave the Australian species undescribed. In the interests of stability, tentatively we retain both names for Australian species pending further studies of the genus.
