Type species:
Johnius carutta Bloch, 1793 by subsequent designation, see Gill, T.N. 1861. Revision of the genera of North American Sciaenidae. Proceedings of the Academy of Natural Sciences, Philadelphia 13: 79-89 [85].
Introduction
We follow Sasaki (1996, 2001) in recognising various species and in not recognising Johnius novaehollandiae which is regarded as probably having the wrong type locality. Many of the species are misidentified in the literature.
Excluded Taxa
- Misidentifications
