Genus Johnius Bloch, 1793

Introduction

We follow Sasaki (1996, 2001) in recognising various species and in not recognising Johnius novaehollandiae which is regarded as probably having the wrong type locality. Many of the species are misidentified in the literature.

Excluded Taxa

Misidentifications

SCIAENIDAE: Johnius coitor (Hamilton, 1822) [indicated that type of Sciaena novaehollandiae Steindachner is a specimen of J. coitor a species not known from Australia and the type locality of Port Jackson is probably wrong] — Sasaki, K. in Hoese, D.F., Bray, D.J., Paxton, J.R. & Allen, G.R. 2006. Fishes. In, Beesley, P.L. & Wells, A. (eds) Zoological Catalogue of Australia. Volume 35.
