Introduction

The family Hexatrygonidae was first described by Heemstra & Smith (1980) to include a single species of deepwater rays known only from the Atlantic and Indo-west Pacific, from the continental slope. Little is known of the family, which is distinctive in having six gill slits and flabby skin. The species is treated in Last & Stevens (1994, 2009), Compagno & Last (1999), Compagno (2005), Séret & Carvalho (2016) and White et al. (2017).
