Compiler and date details
F.W.E. Rowe & J. Gates, Australian Museum, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia (1995) Updated (2001) by Tim O'Hara, Museum Victoria, Carlton, Victoria, Australia
Introduction
The Cidaridae are a cosmopolitan family comprising 29 extant genera. Ten of these are recorded in Australian waters, represented by 26 species.
Cidarids, included in the order Cidaroida, are distinguished from other cidaroid families by the following character states: test rigid; pore pairs usually form single, vertical series with adoral pluriseries in some species; test plates not compound.
