Family BULLIDAE Gray, 1827
- Bullidae Gray, J.E. 1827. Mollusca, pl. 3. In, E. Smedley (ed). Encyclopaedia Metropolitana; or, Universal dictionary of knowledge. London.
Type genus:
Bulla Linnaeus, 1758.
Introduction
This family includes the largest of the bubble shells. The shell is broadly to narrowly ovoid in shape, the spire is depressed leaving only an apical umbilicus, the aperture is large, the shell smooth and often glossy. The animal can be contained within the shell, the pharynx has a radula, and the gizzard both gastral and accessory plates. Bullids are herbivores, and are found mostly in soft sediments near sea grass beds, from whence they emerge at night to forage. Compiled from Burn (in press).

Type genus:
Retusa Brown, 1827.
Introduction
Most retusids are cylindrical with depressed spire, very similar in shell shape to some smaller cylichnids. Some are very pyriform or spindle-shaped. A few retusids retain a small operculum, far smaller than the shell aperture into which the animal retracts. The retusid animal is small, one quarter to one third the shell length, with a pair of rounded lobes projecting from the rear edge of the head on to the anterior shell. All retusids lack a radula. When present, the three gastral plates each have a pimpled, dimpled or crested inner face. Retusids can be especially abundant in intertidal and shallow water, mud and sandy-mud flats. Compiled from Burn (in press).

Type genus:
Cylichna Lovén, 1846.
Introduction
The shells in this family are either cylindrical or barrel shaped, the aperture as long or almost as long as the shell, usually with a depressed or short spire. All species are infaunal, and this habitat is reflected in the drab coloured shells and animals. The animals are small, about one quarter of the shell length, with a pair of rounded lobes projecting rearwards on to the front of the shell. As a general rule, cylichnids have three gastral plates (usually a mirror image pair and one smaller to much smaller) for crushing and grinding their food, and the radula has at least a large sickle-shaped denticulate lateral tooth each side of the radular row mid line, and marginal teeth may also be present. Cylichnids are often common on intertidal and estuarine mud flats; and there are many subtidal and deeper water species, both named and unnamed. Compiled from Burn (in press).

- Diaphanidae Odhner, N. H. 1914. Ptisanula limnaeoides, a new Arctic opisthobranchiate mollusc, its anatomy and affinities. Arkiv för Zoologi .
Type genus:
Diaphana Brown, 1827.
Introduction
Generally small animals with thin fragile transparent shells, into which the body can retract. The head is wider anteriorly, with furrowed margins. The foot is short in those species with external shell, sometime indented in the rear margin, sometimes with an accessory “foot” formed by a posterior fold of the shell mantle showing behind the shell. In species with internal shell, the foot is long and slender, and much wider in front. Compiled from Burn (in press).

Introduction
A family of herbivorous species. The shell is ovoid or narrowed behind, and into which the animal can retract. Haminoeids have both radula and gastral plates, the latter generally with transverse crests of projecting elements. Most species are infaunal, burrowing through the top fine sediments of the substrate. Others are epifaunal, crawling on their algal foods. Animals that burrow are usually dull in colouration, those that crawl epifaunally are often brightly pigmented. The inner whorls of the shell in all species of this family are constantly resorbed, leaving only about one and a half whorls of shelly material to protect the animal. The parapodia are reduced to small triangular folds protecting only the neck of the animal and the anterior edge of the shell at the entry to the mantle cavity. As a general rule, haminoeids live only in the intertidal or shallow subtidal. Many species are nocturnally active. Compiled from Burn (in press).

Family AGLAJIDAE Pilsbry, 1895
- Aglajidae Pilsbry, H.A. 1895. Philinidae, Gastropteridae, Aglagidae, Aplysiidae, Oxynoeidae, Runcinidae, Umbraculidae, Pleurobranchidae. Manual of Conchology 1 16.
Type genus:
Aglaja Renier, 1807.
Introduction
This family lacks both radula and gastral plates, though there are one or two exceptions. Aglajids are elongate, cylindrical animals, rather soft and flabby with a thin parapodial fold each side of the body. A shell, in some species resembling only the top quarter of a Bulla shell, is enclosed within the hinder part of the visceral mass, though exceptionally it may be partly exposed. Some species have pads of extensile setae each side of the mouth which are used to search out food. Many species have a pair, the left one longer, of fleshy trailing projections behind the animal.
Aglajids are predatory carnivores, actively seeking out their food animals which they ingest whole with their strongly muscular pharynx. Aglajid prey includes acoel, polyclad and poychaete worm, shelled opistobranchs, and other species of the family Aglajidae, even their own species, and nemerteans which are ingested just as a human would suck in a length of spaghetti. Compiled from Burn (in press).

- Gastropteridae Swainson, W. 1840. A treatise on malacology or the natural classification of shells and shell-fish. London : Longman, Brown, Green & Longmans 419 pp. [May 1840].
Type genus:
Gastropteron Kosse, 1813.
Introduction
The very wide parapodia, the ability of many species to swim, the general lack of a shell except in the earliest stages of development, the very reduced mantle cavity where the gill has moved forward and is exposed, separate gastropterids from the allied philinids and aglajids. Most species have the posterior end of the head shield narrowed, highly raised and curved forward, sometimes to level with or even in front of the anterior edge of the head. The animal possesses a radula but not gastral plates. Gastropterids are renowned for their striking colours and patterns, especially among the smaller species of which local waters boast several undescribed species. Compiled from Burn (in press).

Family PHILINIDAE Gray, 1850
- PHILINIDAE Gray, 1850.
Type genus:
Philine Ascanius, 1772.
Introduction
Philinids are large-bodied animals enclosing in the hinder part (the visceral mass) a generally thin fragile shell. The shell has a very broad aperture and very short or no spire. It may be smooth except for incremental growth lines, or sculptured with many spiral rows of shallow but distinct punctae or grooves. The animal has thick lateral extensions (parapodia) of the foot folded up against the head shield and visceral mass, and has a radula with usually two large sickle-shaped teeth in each row, as well as three hard gastral plates in the stomach for crushing/grinding ingested food, often small bivalves.
Most philinids live in fine sandy or muddy habitats, and can be exceedingly common. A few are active epifaunal species; these are usually small and sometimes strikingly coloured. Most philinids are creamy white in keeping with their infaunal life. The larger philinids are known to copulate in pairs in line, with the one behind fulfilling the major role. The egg mass of philinids is a balloon anchored by a thread to larger sand grains or shell fragments. The larger species lay flaccid sausage-shaped balloons filled with strings of minute eggs.
