Introduction

The Aulostomidae comprise three species in a single genus (Wheeler 1955; Bowen et al. 2001). One species is recorded from Australia, and is treated in Kuiter (2000, 2009), Randall et al. (1997) and Allen & Erdmann (2012). The larvae are described by Walker (2000).

Trumpetfishes are are found worldwide in tropical and subtropical marine waters. They are often found head-down among gorgonians, hiding among schools of other fishes, or 'shadowing' other fishes to their ambush prey of small fishes. The body is long, slender and compressed, with a small mouth at the end of a tubular snout, a small barbel at the symphysis of the lower jaw and a series of isolated spines preceding the soft dorsal fin. Maximum length for the family is 80 cm.
