Family ACTINODENDRIDAE Haddon, 1898

 

Diagnosis

Endomyarian with well developed pedal disc, limbus not well defined. Column smooth. No marginal sphincter muscle. Fosse absent. Up to 48 branched tentacles cyclically arranged. Terminal branches of tentacles with acrospheres. Two or more well developed siphonoglyphs. 24 pairs of mesenteries, all or almost all perfect and, apart from the directives, fertile. Retractors diffuse, broad, band-like.

Genus Actinodendron de Blainville, 1830

Diagnosis

Actinodendronidae with the oral disc thrown into long arms, 10-48 in number. Sphincter absent. Tentacles arranged more or less spirally all round the arms, and themselves branched. The tips of the tentacles are provided with long basitrichs forming nematocyst batteries. Longitudinal muscles of tentacles and radial muscles of oral disc ectodermal. 2 broad siphonoglyphs, 2 pairs of directives. Mesenteries few, all or almost all perfect. Retractors very strong, diffuse. All mesenteries apart from the directives fertile. Cnidom: spirocysts, basitrichs.

Column smooth, dull greenish yellow with paler vertical lines. Oral disc greyish with irregularly disposed translucent spots, radii stripes deep green stripes near center becoming paler toward periphery.

Diagnosis

Column smooth, cream, yellow, or pinkish, to 230 mm, transversely corrugated when contracted. 2 very strong siphonoglyphs with well developed aboral prolongations. 48 tentacles in two cycles, inner longer than outer. Mouth oval, may be on raised cone, with two siphonoglyphs. 24 pairs of mesenteries. Band-like retractors, on non-directives are curved towards exocoels.

Actinodendronidae with very long arms, the oral faces of the arms free from tentacles, which are set along their sides. The ultimate branches of the tentacles simple and pointed.

Diagnosis

Column pyramidal to elongate and smooth, to 55 mm length. Column whitish-beige, orange-pink, or green. Narrow pedal disc, limbus hardly recognizable. Proximal part of column in some specimens pigmented red. Oral disc narrow to wide. 48 tentacles arrayed in 4 cycles. Tentacles in first, second, and third cycles ramified in branches of up to three orders. Proximal secondary branches of first, second, and third tentacle cycles short. Actinopharyx with 2 deep siphonoglyphs. 24 pairs of mesenteries in 3 cycles, first two cycles usually perfect. Retractor muscles diffuse and strong.
