Family ACANTHOCHITONIDAE
Introduction
The Acanthochitonidae is a large family of chitons found worldwide in tropical to polar seas. The majority of members of this family are poorly known, in part because few specimens are available for study, and the taxonomy of the group is in need of revision.
The family is characterised by insertion plates, usually with slits, on all valves, insertion plate teeth never pectinate; tegmentum often reduced, rarely absent; extra-pigmentary aesthetes absent, girdle spiculose, usually with sutural tufts.

Family CHORIPLACIDAE
Introduction
The family Choriplacidae is monotypic and is endemic to southern Australia. The sole member of this family, Choriplax grayi, usually lives on the prostrate red alga Sonderopelta coriacea in shallow water to a depth of 20 m, and in life the colour of the girdle and tegmentum matches that of the host plant.
The family is characterised by the large and well-developed sutural laminae and unslit insertion plates, very reduced tegmentum, large, fleshy girdle which completely covers the tegmentum with a transparent layer, and holobranchial gills.

Family CRYPTOPLACIDAE
Introduction
The Cryptoplacidae is a small family of very elongate, vermiform chitons. The family comprises a single genus, Cryptoplax, found in tropical and temperate Indian and central western Pacific Oceans and the Red Sea.
Cryptoplacidae are characterised by having reduced valves, the adults with valves seldom articulating; insertion plates on all valves (slit formula 3/0/0), insertion plate teeth never pectinate; extrapigmentary aesthetes absent; and girdle spiculose, usually with sutural tufts.

Family MOPALIIDAE
Introduction
The Mopaliidae is a small family of small to large chitons, found mainly in the Indo-Pacific Ocean. In Australian waters, with the exception of Placiphorella atlantica, species live in littoral to shallow sublittoral depths, and are usually heavily overgrown with algae. Placiphorella atlantica is a cosmopolitan, carnivorous species found on rocks and debris, in depths of 200–1700 m.
The family is characterised by insertion plates with slits on all valves, insertion plate teeth not pectinate, lack of extrapigmentary aesthetes, and girdle with hairs or bristles, never scales.
