Family MACRODINYCHIDAE Kontschán, 2017

Introduction

Hirschmann (1979) used the name Macrodinychidae for this family, but did not provide a description or any means of defining the family. Farrier & Hennessey (1993) and Halliday (1998) used the name Macrodinychidae, also without any diagnosis. Kontschán (2011) used the name Macrodinychidae, and provided a diagnosis and type genus designation by monotypy, but he attributed the family name to Hirschmann (1979) and did not state that it was a new name. The name Macrodinychidae was finally made available by Kontschán (2017).

The family includes the genus Macrodinychus, which was reviewed by Kontschán (2011, 2017), but the status of several other genus-level taxa in this family has not been resolved. Hirschmann & Wisniewski (1993) arranged the species of Macrodinychus in a series of species groups, which have sometimes been treated as genera or subgenera. There are 22 species, recorded from Africa, Central and South America, the Caribbean, southeast Asia, Europe, Russia, Japan, Australia, and several Pacific islands. They are found in soil and litter, and occasionally associated with ants or termites. The Australian fauna includes only two species.
